We tried the Dyson Airwrap, so you can decide!

If you want the short answer and don’t want to bother reading this post, then my answer is “yes, you should airwrap!”

Now for the long answer, as well as the tips, keep on reading.

I purchased my Dyson Airwrap in 2018 when it just came out and I have been using it exclusively since then - to the point that after seeing my Dyson hairdryer not getting much love, I sold it. You should know that I am a fan of the brand way before they ventured into hair accessories and I am currently wondering why I am not a brand ambassador by now.

Joke aside, I was drawn to the Airwrap when it launched because I am not the most pro at using curling thongs or rollers. I can, however, work my way around the hairdryer and a round brush. As I am gifted with super curly hair, and like most curly haired people from my generation, I have always wanted the perfect blowout look at all cost. I did try out the hair straightener, and I made serious progress, but still find it a “hit or miss” when it comes to giving myself that natural hair bounce look. Don’t worry, I’m still practicing on this.

Full disclosure I have naturally curly hair - like, type 3c curls - and I do a Keratine treatment twice a year. I love my curls but with age they now have decided to be so unruly that it took me 45 minutes to detangle them in the shower. That was before the Airwrap, and hence I decided to have keratine treatments to simplify routine.

Now back to the Dyson Airwrap. I don’t think I need to introduce it but just in case, here’s a set what it consists of:

2 x 30mm barrels

2 x 40 mm barrels
1 firm smoothing brush
1 soft smoothing brush
1 round volumising brush
1 pre-styling brush
1 filter cleaning brush
1 storage box

and will cost you 799 SGD (correct at publish time).

Some specific brushes can be purchased separately such as longer barrels as well as a small round brush and small smoothing brush for an extra cost of 59 SGD a piece.

WHAT I LOVE?

Every single time I use it, I simply wonder why such a piece of technology didn’t exist when I was 16 years old. It would have surely made my life easier and would have saved me countless hours trying to manage my hair.

I appreciate how easy it is to use - from the long cord to the easy way of changing the brushes. There are no steep learning curve here. I also appreciate the fact that it comes with all the attachments and I use them all. The multiple brushes help you achieve different hair do in a very easy manner. Finally, I appreciate that I can easily take it with me when traveling and it has even made it to my carry on during overnight trips without feeling like it was in imposition on the rest of my packing. When traveling long haul, I simply keep it in a soft pouch.

My favourite brushes are definitely the barrels. Being able to achieve some those well-formed wave without breaking a sweat or burning yourself feels like an achievement.

Using it feels like you are using a magic wand as you can finally manage some “intricate” looks in such ease. However like any magic spell you still need to work a bit for it

TAKE YOUR TIME

My main advice is take your time when you are doing your hair I know it is hard thing to do I am the first one to leave it to last minute. But for all Airwrap beginners, my advice is to take your time while doing your hair and make sure you section your hair. It makes a huge difference in the final result. I would also highly recommend you learn from others. Starting with the videos available on the Dyson site itself to our dear YouTube. To this day, I still discover some tips and tricks on how to best utilise it for my hair type or for the look I would like to achieve.

DON’T SKIP PREP AND FINISH

There are many reviews here and there that say that certain style don’t hold and when you are based in Singapore like me you know that on top of that you will have to battle the humidity level. Hence prepping your hair according to the hair style you are looking for is a must as well as finishing it properly.

Of course take into account your hair type as not hair do well with certain style and some need more help than others. The Airwrap makes it much easier however the Airwrap won’t change your hair type or structure.

Hence get ready to build your hair product arsenal and that should include a heat protectant and a hairspray for all. In between products will depend on your own hair and therefore I can’t list what you need. Personally I use the Aveda heat protectant and the Morocanoil hairspray (it smells amazing) to hold the curls.

INVESTMENT PIECE

The Dyson Airwrap is an investment and a serious one for me it worked really well as I use it each time I wash my hair and even when I need to do a touch up before going out. On top of that the last two years or so meant that I had to do lots of video calls as well as attending virtual work event which meant that hair had to be even more on point.

As I said in the introduction, I used to own the hairdryer and even wrioe an article about it. But I did end up selling it as it was getting no use at all. The pre-styling brush might not feel enough for some to just hair dry their hair with but it works with me as well as my daughter.
