Pleats, please!

They’re lightweight, easy to maintain, fuss free.

If you’re not already stocking your wardrobe with pieces from Issey Miyake’s Pleats Please line, then this post is for you.

According to many online sources, such as AnOther magazine, Japanese designer Issey Miyake began his exploration into the constraints of fashion design with the traditional Japanese kimono - a piece which underpins his love of layering, and his fascination with the manipulation of textiles. Because of this, his design process thus seeks to challenge the conventions of garment creation by focusing on the relationship between the fabric and the body.

So, in the case of Pleats Please, instead of the traditional method of pleating the fabric and then cutting it to the design, Miyake cuts the garment’s shape first, sews it, and then pleats the finished form. This is also part of the reason why pieces from the Pleats Please line are not only versatile but also very comfortable.

In general, the garments are light and wrinkle-proof. They don’t need to be dry-cleaned, or ironed, and can be folded to a compact size for easy storage and carrying. Plus, when we can all start travelling freely again, this is the perfect “airplane outfit”, because you get to stay comfortable, sleep the whole duration, and step out of the plane without worrying that your outfit has been destroyed.

Still not sure how to style the pieces for everyday use? Check out our tips below.
