Food tales: 5 Classic Restaurants
With the never-ending musical chairs of eateries in Singapore, it can be difficult to make a decision on where you want to eat sometimes. This week, we revisit some of the team's favourite places that have stood the test of time and never disappointed them.
In a fickle world of F&B, these places have some serious longevity..the oldest being nearly 90 years old!
1. KURIYA
Possibly The Curator’s personal favourite Japanese restaurant in Singapore that has never failed her all these years. She loves it because of the wealth of knowledge that the managers have and how it always feels like home, not to mention the premium quality food at a slightly more pocket friendly price than other high end Japanese restaurants. There is something on the menu for everyone, even if you don’t eat raw fish! Her favourites are the Uni Pasta which she eats every single time and their seasonal specials. It is also David Beckham and Cesar Milan’s preferred choice, so if you’re lucky enough you might just bump into them!
2. LUKE'S
A favourite amongst the team for business lunches and date nights, Luke’s is our go-to place that suits every occasion and has a menu that has all our classic favourites. From the unparalleled Kale Salad, Mac and Cheese topped off with Ritz Crackers (genius!), Naked Steak and Warm Chocolate Chip Cookies, their cocktails are also a hit with us. There is nothing that we wouldn’t order from their menu.
3. PU3
Nasi Ambeng is a popular Javanese rice dish that consists of white rice prepared with a platter of dishes. Usually, the rice is placed in the centre of a round tray that's lined with banana leaves. What surrounds the mount of fragrant rice are 10 dishes, including chicken curry or chicken cooked in soy sauce, vegetables, fried noodles, some salted fish, fried coconut flesh, and so on. One of the best restaurants in Singapore that serves this dish is PU3, at Bencoolen Street. Though the restaurant has not been around for very decades, it has fast become a go-to place for those craving to have some delicious Indonesian food that is not Nasi Padang.
4. Imperial Treasure Cantonese Cuisine (Great World City)
With so many Chinese restaurants in Singapore, we are constantly spoilt for choice when it comes to different types of Chinese cuisine. The Imperial Treasure at Great World City still reigns supreme in our books when it comes to classic Cantonese cuisine even with non pork eating friends due to their extensive menu which has pocket friendly dishes and also indulgent ones. Our must-haves are always the Egg White with Truffle Oil with either prawn or scallops or the Lobster noodles (always ask for it mee pok style!). The servers there have been with the restaurant since..just about forever, so you can always trust them to make the best recommendations and for top notch service.
5. Tong heng
With all the hype about the acclaimed Tai Cheong Bakery egg tarts, we revisit one of our favourite traditional bakeries in Singapore whose egg tarts can definitely give the ones from Tai Cheong a run for their money. We’re a sucker for not only the egg custard and crust but also the shape which is what we’d like to think is ergonomically designed to fit perfectly in our hands. The other traditional Chinese pastries are also some of the best you can find in Singapore, our favourite at the Lao Po Bing (Wife’s Biscuit) and Lotus Paste Pastry with Salted Yolk!
