Fashion Geek: The Anatomy of a 2.55

It is one of the most covetable bags of all time and one that never goes out of style - no matter the season. In fact, it is arguably one of the most important bags to have in one's possession. An It bag that has withstood the test of time, Chanel's flap bags have been spotted on every woman worth her fashion salt.

a little history...

The 2.55 bag, as the name suggests, was introduced by Coco Chanel in February 1955 (therefore, 2.55). As fashion history goes, it is said that Coco Chanel was inspired by her time growing up in an orphanage. The double chain straps, for instance, were reminiscent of the dangling chains of keys which falls from the caretakers' waist. It is the same type of chain that she used for the 2.55 bag.

The compartments on the inside of the bag were used for different things as well. The zippered compartment on the inside of the bag was used to keep her love letters (with a boy, for whom the bag Boy Chanel is named after). The slot at the back of the bag is where Coco Chanel puts her money for easy access (and to prevent pickpockets from taking them (you see, in those days, pickpockets would work their way into the main body of the bag). As you can tell, the bag itself has an amazing back story. What's there not to love about it?
