Trend Report: Sleek Sneakers
Designers sent models down the haute couture runway wearing embellished sneakers. (Pictured: Luxe sneakers from Chanel and Dior couture)
This season, staying on trend means getting acquainted with names such as Stan Smith, Chuck Taylor and Jordan. On the runway, Raf Simons and Karl Lagerfeld sent down models wearing glitzy couture pieces that were paired with embellished sneakers that may very well have been their versions of sports sneakers made famous by sportswear labels New Balance, Nike and Adidas.
But before you run out to get yourself a pair, be warned. These kicks will set you back more than a pretty penny. The price tag of those Chanel python shoes, created by specialty atelier Massaro and embellished with lace, pearls, and tweed, is about €3,000. And it comes as part of the complete couture look.
Off the runway, sneakers such as the adidas Stan Smiths are also making a huge comeback. Fashion editors as well as street style stars have been pictured during fashion weeks working the sneakers trend into their stylish designer wardrobe.
But long before this season, the adidas Stan Smith sneakers have already made its rounds as footwear du jour for many fashion insiders. Marc Jacobs, for instance, has been an avid Stan Smiths wearer since the 1990s. But it was in 2010, when Céline's creative director Phoebe Philo unofficially endorsed the shoe by wearing them at her own runway show, did the trend started coming to the fashion forefront. in 2012, adidas took the classic kicks off the market (but new designs are reportedly being released later this year).

Today, designers are seeing not only the practicality of sneakers but also its incredible popularity amongst fashion-forward shoppers. For her pre-fall collection, French designer Isabel Marant (who made the wedge sneakers popular) showcased her own version of the Stan Smiths. Saint Laurent also introduced a pair of white leather sneakers which looked like a US$575 version of the original US$75 adidas Stan Smith.
Ultimately, the sneaker craze has led to many designers clamouring to collaborate with sportswear labels to produce their own line of limited edition sneakers. They include Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci with Nike and Raf Simons with adidas.
