Style Spotlight : Bottega Veneta

The storied house of Bottega Veneta was founded in 1966 in Vicenza, Italy and started out as an artisanal leather goods company. The company’s artisans developed a leather-weaving technique, called intrecciato, that remains the signature of the brand. Unlike many of the other luxury goods brands, Bottega Veneta has no identifying logo. Its woven design is almost instantly recognisable that the company has said the Bottega Veneta slogan is "When your own initials are enough".

Today, the brand has expanded into women’s and men’s ready-to-wear after Tomas Maier took the helm as  the creative director in 2001. But the brands leathergoods is still best known worldwide.

The intricate method of leather weaving was created as a result of the sewing machines originally used by Bottega Veneta’s craftsmen. It is said that these machines, which were initially designed to sew delicate fabrics, could not handle leather durable enough to make sturdy handbags. Therefore, by weaving together strands of delicate leather, the artisans were then able to craft pieces with strength and beauty.

The classic material Bottega Veneta uses for their bags is Nappa leather, but from time to time, one sees special materials used for limited edition pieces. Often times, the inside of a Bottega Veneta bag is lined with soft suede to balance the delicate lambskin exterior, while giving the bag some structure and weight. According to our research, the suede lining is mostly through for the brand's handbags; its clutches and evening bags, however, are lined with satin or cotton.

Today, Bottega Veneta is still considered to be one of the best luxury fashion companies in the world. Its quiet confidence has attracted many high net-worth clients as well as celebrities.
